As from 1 February 2010, Michael has been appointed a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences at the University of Johannesburg in terms of a 3-year contract. He will be lecturing on Taxation on the MCom (Taxation) and the Higher Diploma in International Tax courses in the Department of Accountancy. He has to complete a specified number of lectures and academic papers during this 3-year period after which I automatically qualify for a permanent Professorship. He will also be involved in programmes to improve tax awareness and tax compliance for black students. He was previously a lecturer in the Department of Law at the University if the Witwatersrand for 12 years, but had to resign this position to take up the new appointment.

The Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences of the University of Johannesburg has a distinctive financial focus that sets it apart from other commerce faculties in South Africa. Its programme mix consists of a particular selection of B.Com, MCom and DCom degrees and diplomas that attempt to address the rapidly growing demand for skills in the fields of accountancy, financial economics and econometrics, taxation and financial decision making. The faculty has already established itself as a national leader in teaching and producing candidate Chartered Accountants and Chartered Management Accountants.

The Faculty is the one of the largest faculties in the institution, hosting approximately 20% of enrolled students. This creates numerous opportunities for marketing Webber Wentzel’s services to students and staff at the University of Johannesburg.  The programmes offered by the Faculty are organized within four departments, each with a unique focus:

  • the Department of Accountancy;
  • the Department of Finance and Investment Management;
  • the Department of Economics and Econometrics; and
  • the Department of Commercial Accounting.

The Department of Accountancy:

  • is the biggest residential provider of chartered accountants in South Africa;
  • offers quality programmes which are accredited by various professional bodies ;
  • offers extensive support to learners from disadvantaged communities;
  • is the biggest participant in the SAICA Thuthuka programme which benefits black students and black chartered accountants; and
  • employ lecturers who boast an infectious passion for their task as educators.
